Our first advice, if you are planning to start an online home business, is: don’t believe that building a web based business means stepping on a “get rich fast” path.

Building a home-based business online is a difficult process. It requires commitment, the willingness to learn, dedication and plenty of hard work.

The Internet is neither the magic answer nor a straight road. It’s a tool. A working tool, which in the right hands and used wisely, could definitely lead to success and to a decent financial gain. No serious entrepreneur starts a business without carefully planning for all the possibilities, problems, pros and cons.

So how do you build a successful home-based business?

You start by building a good, coherent business plan. There you include everything you need: materials, advertising, financial needs, skills, knowledge, tools and so on. You list everything in a logical order, considering that on the accuracy of this business plan depends the success of your future business. If you don’t know how to structure your business plan, there are enough layouts online: just Google the term and you’ll find plenty of information. If the Web is not enough, consider hiring a professional consultant.

When you are done with your business plan you’ll need to build up a website. Without a website, eshop or other similar online tools your Web business has no chances to succeed. You probably think that building up a website is an easy task. After all, there are many companies selling for low prices website templates, and even customizable eshops where all you need to do is change a few settings and you have an online marketing tool in no time. These are good for really small home businesses; or for those with not so big dreams. Work at home moms who simply want some extra cash in their free time don’t really need an exclusive website design.

But if you want to build up a brand, stay away from ready to use templates. Hire a designer. Don’t worry if your financial resources are low: there are many designers ready to help home based businesses and small companies build up an online identity. These “web architects” have fair fees and enough knowledge to help you start. But you need to choose carefully.

When you build a website you need to consider first your customers (and that involves a clean layout, an easy to navigate menu, a good structure) and then the search engines (the web code needs to be scanable, valid, all browsers compliant and accessible).

Launch the website only when it is completely ready: think no “under construction” pages, no broken links or other issues that might determine your possible clients question your competence. Building a website is just one piece of the puzzle.

From the moment you have your site up and running, you need to focus on building awareness for your brand/business. But the business plan (which should also include some business identity guidelines) and the website are the very foundation of a home-based business.
